So I think itâs pretty obvious by now that the reception to season 7 has been less than⌠good. The fan base has been shattered. People are upset, angry, and abandoning this series in droves (Iâve lost over 50 followers as I write this, just from people no longer wanting anything to do with this show) and have been incredibly vocal as to the reason why.
They killed Adam.Â
After two weeks of receiving praise for the relationship that was revealed at San Diego Comic Con, fans discovered on Friday night that Adamâs existence would be short lived, further contributing to this popular âBury Your Gaysâ trope.Â
And Iâve seen people confused at this outcry. They donât understand why people are so upset at this tiny side characterâs death. Whatâs the big deal, right? Itâs war! Thereâs supposed to be casualties!
And to that kind of response I have to narrow my eyes and go:
âOhâŚ. maybe you understand the history of this.â
Because it is a history. A rich one. âBury your gaysâ isnât a trope in the same why that âFake datingâ is a trope. Itâs not popular out of coincidence and I feel like many people are ignorant of that, which is FAIR! Because most voltron fans are young, most tumblr users are young, so I donât expect you to be watching documentaries on LGBT+ cinema in between studying for your chemistry exams.Â
So thatâs where I come in. Buckle in children as I take you on a journey on why the âBury your gaysâ trope exists, and the harmful ramifications that it has had on the LGBT+ community since its inception.

Adam is not a fucking horrible person, yes he and shiro ended the engagement and yes he didnât support shiro through his journey to kerberos but shiro was dying of a severe degenerative disease, and Adam knew he didnât have much time left with the love of his life as it was. And adam said âi wonât go through this againâ, hinting that Shiro had already abandoned Adam once before for his dream. So while Adam didnât support Shiro, he was also extremely hurt and angry that Shiro was choosing space over him AGAIN and Shiro basically told Adam he wasnât enough for him AGAIN.
Right there. That is the face of someone who is hurting, who is conflicted and at odds with what he wants and what he needs.
Adam said Shiro is the world to him, absolutely everything, but yet Shiro left himâŚthat fucking sucks it really does. Shiro got hurt but Adam did too, if not more than equally. Shiro, the noble and brave leader and friend of so many, one of the kindest souls in this show, would not choose to give his life to a complete ass. Adam is validated, both he and Shiro gave up on each other and they both made mistakes regarding their âlong and beautiful relationshipâ. They are both in the wrong, thank you for coming to my ted talk.

Ok just to clear some shit up with yall. This is Adam, Shiroâs *previous* significant other. They are not still together, they broke up. Thereâs a lot of misinfo being spread around right now, but at the panel, Lauren specifically said they broke up before the Kerb mission. They were on their way to being engaged, but it didnât happen because of disagreements and Adam not wanting Shiro to go to space. Iâm happy for Shiro being confirmed gay, but I donât want yall to start a shitstorm when season 7 comes around and theyâre arenât engaged like everyone on twitter and here seem to believe. This was confirmed at the panel.
