Tips That Can Save Your Kid’s Life.

THIS IS IMPORTANT

When I was a child, from the time I was about four and could understand things, my mom told me and my brother that we should have a secret word. That way, if we were ever in trouble or felt unsafe and we didn’t want the people around us to know we needed her to come get us, we could let her know. So she let us pick the word and my brother and I chose the phrase “peanut butter cups.” (I’m happy to share the phrase now since both my brother and I are adults now).

I used the phrase twice in my life. Once, I was at a friends house when I eight years old. Her dad got really drunk and was throwing things against the wall. I was really scared and I didn’t want to draw attention to myself on the phone when I called my mom to come get me because I didn’t know if he would get more violent if I asked her to come get me. So I called her and was calm and after a couple minutes I asked “Hey mommy, did you get me those peanut butter cups from the store?” And she said “I’ll be right there.” And she came and got me within minutes.

Second, I was a teenager spending the night at a friends house. Her brother and dad were drinking and they started talking about things that made me uncomfortable – ie: what they liked to do to women. My friend didn’t seem perturbed and said that was normal for them and that I shouldn’t worry. But I was worried because they were really drunk and I was 15 and the only ‘woman’ around that wasn’t related to them. I went in my friends room, told her I needed to call my mom and say goodnight. Before I hung up with her I asked “Next time we go to the store, can we get some peanut butters cups? I’ve been craving them.” And she came and got me, just like that.

Two incidents, one as a young child, one years later as a teen. Don’t discredit this stuff, it fucking works. My brother used it a few times too. Let your child pick the word and no never, ever, ever, ever get mad at them for using it no matter what it is.

DO NOT SCROLL PAST THAT.

Off topic, but very important! I was taught to yell “this is not my mom/dad.” A young kid freaking out in public is likely to be ignored out of embarrassment, but a kid telling you right out that they don’t know who is messing with them? That will turn heads.

VERY IMPORTANT!!

  • professors are urging their students to let them know if theyre not gonna come to class so theyll know that theyre still alive
  • parents are telling their kids not to come home late, or if they will, to take an uber even though its priced like 5x more
  • people are sharing constitutional rights on twitter, to teach everyone what to say to the popos just in case
  • nobody trusts the police anymore
  • police have a QUOTA of “drug addicts” they need to kill
  • almost 13k dead without due process, but chines drug lords and presidents son who were involved in a drug smuggling worth 6 billion are still walking free
  • all it takes is a facebook rumor to put you on the hit list
  • politicians who are criticizing the administration are being impeached
  • politicians who love the administration admit that their duty is to the president, NOT to the people
  • theres been talks in extending the presidents term
  • It literally feels like an unofficial dictatorship
  • please help us

does anyone have any news sources and dates for people to be better informed??

hiya i made that post on mobile so i wasnt able to add links but here are some sources on whats been happening in the ph for the last few months:

numbers of people dead and arrested because of the war on drugs as of january 2017

17 and 19 yr olds tortured and killed by the police

presidents son involved in 6 billion drug smuggling has charges suddenly dropped

twitter thread on what to do in case the police accuses you of being a drug dealer

what to do in case the police demands to search your stuff

police suddenly shows up at bars near a university demanding to search students bags

president orders police NOT to share case files with the commission of human rights

talks about extending the presidents term until 2025 bc federalism

house of representatives votes to give commission on human rights a budget of $20 for the WHOLE YEAR

im p sure i missed a lot since something bad happens literally EVERYDAY so like feel free to add more

in what ways can we help? like. this is a pretty bad situation yall are in and we’d love to help out any way we can

@crystalthecool for the most part just keeping awareness up helps. Making it a big deal and pointing out just how fucked up it is actually does help put it into perspective for the Filipinos who have no idea just how serious the situation is (mainly because awareness and education are so lacking that most Filipinos don’t even know what the CHR does and will just parrot Duterte when he says he doesn’t like it)

The budget hasn’t been finalized but with Duterte’s well documented vendetta against Human Rights and his friendship with the Marcos family aka the reason the Human Rights Commission was created in the first place after Ferdinand Marcos stole billions during a two decade Martial Law era which saw the torture, disappearance and death of thousands of Filipinos we’re not very optimistic about it.

Some advice for dressmakers:

1. Pockets are a thing.
2. Breasts are a thing.

Leave room in your design for both.

#I’m looking at you summer dresses #made for people with flat chests#and no material possessions they need to carry with them (via @ticktockclockwork)

Yep, this is a real problem. From a design stand point it saves fabric and time since you don’t have to add any darts or pockets, and they go with the premise that a flat square shape should fit everyone without having to make much changes to the pattern (except to make it bigger or smaller). This whole one-size-fits-all mentality in fashion is so flawed, and actually impractical, it really annoys me how teachers let it slide in college and how the apparel industry continues to spew it year after year.

As someone who has breasts (DDD-H depending on what manufacturer I’m talking to) and loves pockets, let me wholeheartedly recommend eshakti.com. I started buying dresses from them in November and I love them. They will customize necklines, hemlines, etc., for a $9.95 flat fee, they will customize to your measurements if you don’t fit a standard size, and I’ve really enjoyed all my dresses from them. Most of their dresses come in sizes from XS to 6XL Feel free to message or send me an ask if you have specific questions!

UHM EXCUSE ME I JUST CHECKED THEM OUT AND??????

Okay, friends, let’s talk about going to protests and weaponizing our whiteness, if in fact we are white.

You know what the protesters who marched with Dr. King wore? Their best. Their clergy stoles, their suits. If you’re a doctor or a nurse? Wear your scrubs. If you’re a parent? Wear your PTA shirt if it’s too hot for a suit. If you’re a student? Dress like you’re going to go volunteer somewhere nice, or wear a t-shirt that proclaims you a member of your high school band, your drama group, your church youth group. Whatever it is, make sure it’s right there with your white face.

This is literally the tactic of the people who marched with King in the 60s, and we need to bring it back, and bring it back HARD.

I do this all the time when I go to marches. I wear my cutest, least-offensive geeky t-shirt, crocs and black pants, or I wear my t-shirt that mentions my kid’s school district, or now I’ll wear the pink t-shirt that says I’m part of the Sisterhood at my shul. If it’s cold enough, I wear a cardigan and jeans and sit my ass in my wheelchair. (I need to anyway.) I put signs on my wheelchair that say things like ‘I love my trans daughter’ and ‘love for all trans children’ or something else that applies to the event. Dress like you are going to an interview if you can, or make yourself look like a parent going to pick up a gallon of milk at the corner store. Make yourself “respectable.” Use respectability politics and whiteness AS A WEAPON.

Fuck yes I will weaponize the fact that I look like a white soccer mom. And you should do this too if you can. Weaponize the fuck out of your whiteness. If you are disabled and comfortable with doing so, turn ableism on its head and weaponize it. Make it so that the cameras that WILL be pointed at you see your whiteness, see your status as a parent, see your status as a community member. See you in your wheelchair or with your cane. If you have privilege or a status that allows you to use it as a weapon or a shield, use it as a shield to defend others or a weapon to break through the bullshit.

Solar Eclipse Glasses Notice

eriquin:

writertobridge:

I know a lot of people in the US are super excited for the eclipse on August 21st. I’m in that group. But if you’re going to look at the eclipse, you need solar eclipse glasses. No sunglasses. And don’t even think about going with no eye protection at all.  You can go blind if you look at the eclipse. Going without solar eclipse glasses is NOT optional.

That said, there are people cashing in on the solar eclipse craze. They’re making fake eclipse glasses. The Seattle Times reported on the fakes on August 8th and spoke with a spokesperson for the American Astronomical Society (AAS) about it. Even if the fake glasses seem safe, they’re not. Richard Tresch Fienbern from the AAS explained:

“The problem with fakes is that you can’t know if they’re letting unsafe levels of solar ultraviolet and/or infrared radiation into your eyes. You’d never know until it’s too late because our retinas don’t have pain receptors.”

The AAS has a page devoted entirely to what real ISO-compliant solar eclipse glasses look like.

This includes showing the correct text on the inside of the glasses. Click on this link to see the text.

According to the USA Today, there are only five companies that make eclipse glasses that are certified by the AAS and NASA: American Paper Optics, Baader Planetarium, Rainbow Symphony, Thousand Oaks Optical, and TSE 17. If you’re going to buy eclipse glasses used on eBay or another website, make sure that they come from one of these five manufacturers or have the correct text written inside.

Fake eclipse glasses can look incredibly convincing. Here is a pair that my mom purchased on eBay.

If you have some solar eclipse glasses already, look for this code:

ISO 12312-2

If that code is not on your solar eclipse glasses do not wear them. Even if they are safe, it is not worth the risk. You can do irreversible damage to your eyes if you look at an eclipse without the right eye wear. This includes blindness. Again, you can go blind if you look at an eclipse with improper eye wear.

Be safe. Get the real deal. The links have been provided to you above.

Please spread this post so more people can see it.

Thank you.

Don’t just skim this post and think that if you see that code on your glasses it’ll be good enough. Here’s the American Astronomy Society list of approved vendors. They’ve reviewed the ISO paperwork for these vendors. Remember, you can’t test if your glasses are good enough without specialized equipment. You have to trust the vendor.

I live in a country, where straight-up Nazi’s, with torches, marched on a
campus founded by Thomas Jefferson, shouting Nazi slogans, wearing MAGA
hats, saying “Heil Trump,” and attacked counter-protestors last
night/this morning.

So for the record: Fuck white-supremacists.
Fuck Nazi’s. Fuck the current administration that emboldens their
actions. Fuck the people that voted for them. Black lives matter.
Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals, Transexuals, Asexuals, Nonbinaries, and
everything in-between have the right to exist in public spaces. Women
have the right to abortions. ISIS is NOT representative of Islam. We
need single-payer healthcare in this country. Minimum wage needs to be
AT LEAST $15 an hour.

And if you have a problem with any of that? Unfollow my ass.
