NOTE: one type of fold will rarely appear on its own – they interact with each other quite a bit! for example, spiral folds might define the outline of a pant leg, while the interior folds might be zig-zag folds.
i’m trying to re-learn how to draw clothing, so i made this little guide to the most common shapes of folds that appear. hope it helps someone else too!
Ah! Well I thought I posted it but I suppose I never did, whoops! This is made using Photoshop CS6. Hopefully its simple but detailed enough. However if not I would recommend looking up some vids on making patterns, there are a lot out there!
I mostly eyeball it…… drawing hands over and over gives you a sense of how the proportions work out without having to use references or drawing guidelines. So my recommendation to you is to draw hands over and over. Break them down into simpler shapes.
Fingernails are your friend. Seriously. The way how they curve will add LOTS of dimension to your hands.
If you can’t eyeball it, there are tons of guidelines online that you can try out. As for me, the bottom left is what I used when I couldn’t eyeball it.
